US BNP Paribas ECM team sees rise in cross-border deals from European corps
BNP Paribas’ nascent US equity capital markets team is seeing growing deal opportunities as long-standing European corporates target North America for ECM deals, US co-heads Evan Riley and Mark Lynagh told this news service.
“On the ECM side, you’re seeing a lot of cross border-related activity; this is an area where we can be highly relevant and is definitely a competitive advantage for us,” Riley, who joined a year ago from UBS to bolster the bank’s Wall Street credentials, said.
Several offerings in the past year have been trans-Atlantic in nature, he said. US exchanges have seen offerings including Birkenstock [NYSE:BIRK], Amer Sports [NYSE:AS] and ARM [NASDAQ:ARM].
Riley describes a need for “objective advice” for corporates on both listing venues and equity solutions, as clients increasingly consider a variety of options beyond domestic exchanges.
More UK and European listed corporates are in conversations to either add a secondary listing in New York, or to shift primary listings to a US exchange, as reported by this news service, meaning cross border will become a more frequent element of ECM issuance.
Recently, Marex Group, a UK-headquartered financial services platform, priced a NASDAQ IPO.
But the traffic is not all one way.
Last year’s dual listing of Coty in Paris, for example, is seen by the advisory community as a model for issuers to pursue listings back in their home countries.
Riley talked about a “transatlantic corridor” that the bank is trying to develop to help European-headquartered clients (institutions, family offices and corporates) expand in the US.
Lynagh, who relocated to New York last year to help with expansion efforts and is also global head of investment grade finance, concurred that ECM is a “core pillar” of its strategy, with opportunities to reinforce core sectors such as industrials, consumer technology, low carbon energy, as well as verticals within healthcare and real estate.
Other banks are getting into the cross-border game more heavily, with UBS also recently hiring Citigroup veteran Gregor Feige to co-head its equity capital markets unit in the Americas. Feige joined UBS as co-head of Americas ECM, and is now leading the unit alongside Brad Miller, according to a release.
