Philip Hu, Founding Member & Managing Director of Primavera Capital, on energy transition outlook

In the fireside chat with Philip Hu, the founding member and managing director at Primavera Capital, the discussion revolved around the outlook for energy transition. Hu shared his background and the journey of Primavera Capital, which manages around $20 billion across PEC credit and has around 100 portfolio companies and 100 employees across Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, and Silicon Valley offices.

Hu discussed the energy transition in China and Asia, highlighting that China is the largest greenhouse gas emitter, equivalent to the US, India, and EU combined. However, on a per capita basis, China is about half that of the US. He emphasized the need for the US and China to work together collaboratively to tackle carbon emissions.

Hu also touched on the investment opportunities in clean energy and electrification, stating that China invested half a trillion dollars in energy transition in 2022, which is larger than the next nine countries combined. He also mentioned that China accounted for nearly half of all renewable power deployment globally in 2022.

When asked about the future of various sectors in energy transition, Hu expressed optimism for leading players in solar, wind, and EV sectors. He also saw potential in hydrogen and carbon capture, given their low base and the overall interest from investors in these sectors.

Hu concluded by expressing his aspiration for Asian funds to be considered as global funds without the Asian tag, acknowledging that while they are not there yet, it could be a possibility in a decade or so.
