Julienne Oyler, CEO of Inkomoko, on helping entrepreneurs set up businesses

In a recent fireside chat hosted by Giovanni Amodeo, Julienne Oyler, CEO of Inkomoko, shared her inspiring journey and the impactful work of Inkomoko in supporting entrepreneurs across Africa. The discussion covered several key topics, highlighting the unique approach and significant achievements of Inkomoko.

Background and Founding of Inkomoko: Julienne Oyler began by recounting the origins of Inkomoko. She and her co-founder, Sarah, were inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit they witnessed in Silicon Valley and sought to explore similar potential in Africa. They discovered that while African entrepreneurs had innovative ideas and passion, they lacked access to essential resources such as financing, networks, and business skills. This gap led to the creation of Inkomoko, aimed at providing comprehensive support to local entrepreneurs.

Unique Approach: Capacity Building and Direct Financing: Inkomoko’s model stands out by combining capacity building with direct financing. Oyler explained that they first work closely with entrepreneurs to understand their businesses, provide training, and offer one-on-one advisory support. After six months of capacity building, Inkomoko then invests in these businesses. This dual approach addresses both the technical and financial gaps that entrepreneurs face, creating a robust pipeline for sustainable growth.

Focus on Marginalized Groups: A significant turning point for Inkomoko was recognizing the untapped potential within refugee communities. Oyler emphasized that intentionally including marginalized groups, such as refugees, is crucial for fostering inclusive growth. Inkomoko’s work in refugee camps and with internally displaced persons has led to remarkable success, with the organization doubling in size every year for the past seven years.

Impact and Growth: Oyler shared compelling stories of entrepreneurs like Adela, a refugee who became a successful business owner with Inkomoko’s support. These stories underscore the profound social impact of Inkomoko’s work. The organization recently raised $200 million to further its mission, with plans to support half a million micro and small enterprises across eight countries by 2030, ultimately benefiting around 8 million people.

Collaboration with Public and Private Sectors: Inkomoko collaborates extensively with both public and private sectors. Oyler highlighted a recent partnership with the Government of South Sudan to provide national identification cards to entrepreneurs, enabling them to access formal financial services. Such collaborations are vital for creating sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

Vision for the Future: Looking ahead, Oyler envisions significant growth for Inkomoko. By 2025, the organization aims to work with 100,000 businesses annually. The focus remains on impact, with a commitment to poverty alleviation, self-reliance, and community development. Inkomoko’s holistic approach ensures that entrepreneurs not only thrive but also contribute to the broader economic and social fabric of their communities.

Conclusion: Julienne Oyler’s insights during the fireside chat highlight the transformative power of entrepreneurship when coupled with the right support. Inkomoko’s innovative model and dedication to inclusive growth are paving the way for a brighter future for African entrepreneurs.
