How OpenAI/Microsoft and other ‘big tech’ AI partnerships ended up in the antitrust hotseat

 

In this weeks’ epsiode we’re looking at why artificial intelligence has been one of the hottest regulatory topics in both Europe and the US in recent months. As the AI Act has been passed by the EU’s co-legislators, and as the US and UK look consider their own efforts to regulate AI, competition authorities have come to take a front seat in the debate as attention shifts to which firms will shape AI in the years to come. In recent months, the EC, FTC and the CMA have all kicked off their own initiatives to look at the partnerships between ‘big tech’ players like Google and Microsoft and in particular, OpenAI/Microsoft. So will regulators intervene? Why are they applying such heavy scrutiny now?
