Cornerstone Research sees increasing revenue from antitrust practice – CEO

  • To continue organic growth trajectory under partnership structure
  • Announced slew of senior vice president promotions last month

Cornerstone Research, a provider of economic and financial consulting and expert testimony, is seeing accelerating revenue from its antitrust practice, said CEO Bryan Ricchetti.

The firm had its origins on the finance side of the business but in the last 10–15 years, it expanded to antitrust and competition. As a result, revenue has tripled in the last 10 years and doubled in the last five.

The antitrust practice alone has seen at least four-fold growth in the last five or six years, he said.

“There is a lot of antitrust scrutiny globally, especially around Big Tech,” he said, adding that Cornerstone has deep relationships with regulatory agencies. It often hires economists with experience working at these agencies, he said.

Since the last of its three cofounders retired a couple of years ago, Ricchetti said the company, established in 1989, plans to continue growing largely by grooming professionals in-house and opportunistically hiring professionals from other firms. “Our core strategy is organic growth. Most partners enter the firm as associates,” he said.

There is no intention to sell the company or take it public, Ricchetti said. Being a privately held partnership provides “succession across generations of partners.”

Ricchetti, who joined the company in 2007, said Cornerstone is part of the niche industry of providing expert witnesses. Its economists are called in to testify on antitrust issues and high-stakes merger litigation, he said.

The CEO declined to disclose revenue but said the company has 1,300 professionals across nine offices in Europe and the US. Cornerstone’s headcount has doubled in the last six or seven years. It has about 70 partners.

Other players in the space include Compass Lexecon, Charles River Associates, Analysis Group in Boston, and NERA Economic Consulting.

Cornerstone announced a slew of senior promotions in August, naming seven executives to senior vice president. They included Vildan Altuglu, who coheads Cornerstone’s consumer fraud and product liability practice, Yan Cao, who coheads its finance practices, and Celeste Saravia, cohead of its antitrust and competition practice.
