Crossroads: OBBB likely to slow renewables
With the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) winding down tax credits for wind and solar projects, many renewables’ professionals have argued this will push up power prices for consumers.
But it’s not so simple, says Segue Sustainable Infrastructure Co-Founder and Partner David Riester. Despite the need for power and lack of alternatives to renewables, the bill will lead to significantly fewer gigawatts of Clean Energy coming online in the next five years, Riester said.
“The problem is of a sequencing nature,” Riester said last week on Infralogic’s Crossroads podcast. “At the time that we are asked to make a lot of these big investment decisions in projects that are impacted by the bill, we won’t know certain things, like how quickly is the demand side of the market going to understand that they need to absorb higher prices.”
The result, Riester added, is likely to be that fewer data centers are built in the near term, since the energy needed to power them will not be available.
