Crossroads: Igneo uses European experience to cross-pollinate US asset performance

Igneo Infrastructure Partners’ new head of Europe and the firm’s co-head of infrastructure for North America appeared on Infralogic’s Crossroads podcast to compare opportunities in the US and Europe.

Hamish Lea-Wilson, recently named head of Europe for Igneo, and Michael Ryder, a New York-based Igneo partner who is co-lead for infrastructure in North America, joined Infralogic Senior Reporter Liam Ford for the podcast. Ryder and Lea-Wilson said that Igneo has been working with its portfolio companies to reinforce their capabilities and coordinate to meet goals.

One of the firm’s growing investments in North America is Michigan-based US Signal, which is working with other Igneo portfolio companies on figuring out how to source renewable energy for data centers.

“We see a lot of opportunity on both the renewable side and on the data center development side and bringing those two skills and that expertise together is a key focus of ours right now,” Ryder said.

Lea-Wilson and Ryder also talked about how Igneo’s Scandlines, which operates a ferry line between Germany and Denmark, is helping to inform renewable energy investments for the firm’s largest US asset, short-line railroad company Patriot Rail. Scandlines’ new ferry has the world’s largest lithium-ion battery bank on a ship and can charge in less than 20 minutes, according to Scandlines.

“At Patriot Rail, we’ve been actually working quite hard at looking at options to be able to use battery-powered locomotives,” with a pilot program set for the next year or two at the company’s Sacramento line, Ryder said.

The two also discussed how offshore wind, once a difficult investment proposition in Europe, has evolved into a much safer bet today—and what might happen with the US offshore wind market going forward.
